LONDON :Defending men's champion Novak Djokovic and women's top seed Iga Swiatek started their Wimbledon campaigns with routine victories on Monday as rain temporarily halted play on the outside courts and the threat of climate protests lingered in the air.
Novak Djokovic launched his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title and 24th Grand Slam triumph on Monday with his 40th successive win on Centre Court as Russian players defiantly marked their return from a controversial 2022 ban. The 36-year-old Djokovic, who has won the past four titles at the All England Club, defeated 68th-ranked Pedro Cachin of Argentina, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on the tournament's showpiece court, where he has not lost since 2013. Djokovic even found time to help ground staff dry out probably the world's most famous lawn after the surface became too slippery following a downpour.

Novak Djokovic took matters into his own hands after the grass on Centre Court took longer than expected to dry as rain showers blighted day one at Wimbledon. Djokovic, who is bidding for a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title, saw his first-round match against Pedro Cachin suspended after the first set due to rain. Ad As it was only spitting it didn’t look like the rain would cause a long delay.
Wimbledon will celebrate Roger Federer's achievements at the All England Club with a special ceremony on Centre Court on the second day of the championships on Tuesday. The Swiss eight-time champion, who announced his retirement last September, will visit the scene of some of his greatest triumphs and be honoured before the start of play. "I'm pleased to say that Roger will be with us tomorrow and we will have a special celebratory moment on Centre Court before play starts just to honour him as the man holding the most gentlemen's singles titles here at Wimbledon," All England Club chief executive Sally Bolton said on Monday.
