PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz all were placed on the same half of the French Open men’s bracket in Thursday’s draw for the clay-court Grand Slam tournament.
Rafael Nadal has won the French Open in all kinds of ways. He’s won it as a teenager, he’s won it without dropping a set, he’s won it as the overwhelming favourite, he’s won it against Roger Federer, he’s won it against Novak Djokovic, he’s won it against Robin Soderling. Only once has he won it without winning another clay event beforehand that season, and that was in 2020 when the French Open was pushed back to October.
Rafael Nadal is locked in an all-time Grand Slam battle with world number one Novak Djokovic going into the French Open but both could end up being upstaged by teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal, a 13-time title-winner on the Parisian red clay, is far from his unstoppable best as he nurses a chronic foot injury that flared up again in the build-up to Roland Garros. The Australian Open champion suffered early exits in Madrid and Rome with his most recent tournament win back in February.
The French Open begins on Sunday with Novak Djokovic and Barbora Krejcikova looking to defend the titles they won last year, while Rafael Nadal goes in search of a 14th Paris crown.
Mats Wilander has highlighted some of the differences between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz ahead of the 2022 French Open while mentioning Roger Federer. Alcaraz has stunned the tennis world with some of his electric play already so far this year and the rising star has been made the tournament favourite by many bookmakers ahead of Roland-Garros. Ad/> But despite being a slight injury doubt, Nadal remains on the entry list and cannot be underestimated as he attempts to follow up his remarkable Australian Open triumph earlier in the year with a record-extending 14th title in Paris.
Novak Djokovic admits he will be fired up by the fiasco of his high-profile deportation from Australia when he targets a record-equalling 21st major on his Grand Slam return at the French Open. World number one Djokovic captured a second Roland Garros title in 2021 followed by a sixth Wimbledon to move to 20 majors alongside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. However, his unseemly exit from Melbourne following his refusal to be vaccinated opened the door for Nadal to claim a second Australian Open and 21st Grand Slam crown.
