IPL 2022: Covid cases led to nervousness but we maintained focus, says Delhi Capitals' skipper Rishabh Pant

Delhi Capitals' (DC) camp on the morning of the game on Wednesday created a lot of confusion and nervousness, but the team made a conscious effort to shut out the outside noise and focus on the match, said skipper Rishabh Pant after the nine-wicket win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The cloud over the IPL game was lifted an hour before toss time after the BCCI confirmed that the match will go on despite a sixth Covid-positive case being reported in the Delhi camp on game day. "There was a lot of confusion because we learnt of the positive test (Tim Seifert) in the morning. We were a bit nervous and there were talks of the game getting cancelled. But we spoke as a team that we must purely focus on the match," Pant said at the post-match presentation.

IPL 2022, Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings Highlights: Warner, Shaw help Delhi notch up emphatic 9-wicket win over Punjab

Delhi Capitals against Punjab Kings. With Tim Seifert becoming the sixth member in three days from the Capitals contingent testing positive for Covid-19 in the morning, the players waited in their hotel rooms till the last hour, uncertain if the match would go ahead while their opponents were already at the venue. As it happened | Scorecard | Points TableAs the remaining members returned negative, just 15 players and a handful of support staff were allowed to go to Brabourne stadium. Languishing at eighth spot in the points table, confined to hotel rooms and the team engulfed in uncertainty, coach Ricky Ponting and captain Rishabh Pant turned up at the venue, delivered strong speeches revolving around 'control the controllable' and galvanized the team. The team had found its purpose. Capitals may have been the wounded team when they reached the venue but when they left the stadium, they had brutally scarred Punjab Kings. They dismissed Punjab for a paltry 115 and then chased down the target in 10.3 overs with nine wickets to spare. After electing to bowl first, Pant's bowlers literally delivered the match as a souvenir of the team's character. The Capitals bowlers, led by the guile of Axar Patel, were so accurate that It never appeared this one was the same pitch on which over 400 runs were scored a couple of nights ago.

IPL 2022: 'Take 150-200 catches a day, convert nervousness into positive energy' - Maninder Singh's mantra to become a good fielder

The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season is a prime example of good catches turning a game on its head. At the same time, a dropped catch is enough to show a team the exit door. Apart from a number of jaw-dropping and acrobatic efforts by the fielders, the IPL this year has also seen a number of catches being dropped. During the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals, DC captain Rishabh Pant made a mess of a caught behind chance off Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav. Karthik was batting on 5 when Pant failed to grasp Karthik's catch. Karthik went on to score an unbeaten 66 off 34 balls to eventually help RCB register a win. In another instance, in the Rajasthan Royals vs Lucknow Super Giants match LSG's Krunal Pandya put down a dolly at long-on off Krishnappa Gowtham. RR's Shimron Hetmyer was batting on 14 when he was dropped by Krunal and the Windies batsman made a mockery of the LSG bowlers and piled on an unbeaten 59 off 36 balls to help RR post 165 on the board. In reply, LSG managed 162 and lost the match by 3 runs.

"Change Of Mindset Needed": Ravi Shastri On Rishabh Pant's Approach In IPL 2022

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has by no means been poor with the bat in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, scoring 144 runs from five matches with a strike rate of 146.94 and average of 36, but he hasn't looked his destructive best either, as he has tried to play with a more circumspect approach while batting. However, former India coach Ravi Shastri feels that he should forget about batting responsibly and just play freely, as that is what brings out the best in him. He also said that it would help him captain the side better as well.
