Alberto Dainese stuns Mark Cavendish and big names to win Stage 11 sprint at Giro d’Italia 2022

After Domenico Pozzovivo’s successful moonlighting as a leadout man for teammate Biniam Girmay on Tuesday it was Romain Bardet’s turn to play a huge role in a superb victory for his DSM teammate Alberto Dainese in Wednesday’s Stage 11 to Reggio Emilia. Frenchman Bardet piloted Dainese around the final bend ahead of the home straight after Team DSM shook up their tactics and backed the Italian 24-year-old instead of their regular Dutch fast-man Cees Bol in what could be the last mass bunch sprint of the 105th edition of the race.

Biniam Girmay: Trailblazing Eritrean beats Mathieu van der Poel to make history with Giro d’Italia victory

Biniam Girmay (Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert Materiaux) became the first Black African rider to win a Grand Tour stage after holding off Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) in a thrilling finale on Stage 10. Girmay was forced to fight through the pack in the closing kilometres after briefly going the wrong way on a descent, but his superb Intermarche team delivered him back to the front of a reduced 30-man group that contested the win.

Giro d'Italia 2022 - What can we expect from the second week of the Giro with maglia rosa on the line?

More storylines emerged from Sunday’s summit showdown on Blockhaus than an entire season of Game of Thrones – from Natnael Tesfatsion’s high-speed crash on the descent of the Passo Lanciano to the longest uphill sprint you’ll likely see from Jai Hindley, as the plucky Spaniard Juanpe Lopez battled to save his pink jersey in the Australian’s wake. Many things were confirmed during the brutal 191km test, most notably Tom Dumoulin still being well short of his GC level and the poor state of Simon Yates’s knee following his crash on the road to Etna last Tuesday.

The fight for the maglia rosa at the Giro d’Italia is “wide open”, according to Eurosport expert Robbie McEwen, after an explosive outing on the Blockhaus left just 29 seconds separating the top seven riders. Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) survived his toughest test in pink but saw his lead slashed as Jai Hindley (Bora-hansgrohe) chalked up a surprise win on Stage 9.

‘I lost my mind’ – Juan Pedro Lopez says sorry after throwing bottle at rival at Giro d’Italia

An emotional Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) has apologised for throwing a bottle at Sam Oomen (Jumbo-Visma) after the pair clashed on Stage 9 at the Giro d’Italia. Lopez produced a gritty ride to cling to the leader’s pink jersey on Stage 9, coming home 1’46” adrift of surprise winner Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe).
