The Indian selectors on Friday named wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson as a replacement fr KL Rahul for the five-match T20I series between India and West Indies, starting Friday. Rahul has not travelled with the team and will miss the entire series as he has been advised rest by the BCCI medical team after recovering from a bout of COVID-19.
KL Rahul has had a torrid run of late. He was supposed to lead India in the T20I series at home against SOuth Africa in June, but was ruled out due to a groin injury. He then underwent a successful surgery for sports hernia in Germany and is now on the road to recovery. Rahul has over the years had recurrent lower abdominal related fitness issues, including groin strains and hamstring injuries. "It's been a tough couple of weeks but the surgery was successful. I'm healing and recovering well. My road to recovery has begun. Thank you for your messages and prayers. See you soon," Rahul had tweeted earlier.
Team India arrived in Trinidad on Wednesday ahead of their white-ball series against West Indies, which is scheduled to start from Friday. Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan, Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Siraj were some of the players seen at the hotel along with the rest of the squad. India and England will play three T20Is, followed by as many ODIs, from July 7 to 17. After being ruled out of the rescheduled fifth Test, skipper Rohit Sharma will make his return for the white-ball games, according to a BCCI release. Rohit Sharma had tested positive for COVID-19 during India's tour game against Leicestershire. Meanwhile, young pacer Arshdeep Singh also received his maiden ODI call-up. Arshdeep was part of India's squad for the two-match T20I series against Ireland, but failed to find a place in the playing XI in both games.
India sealed a thrilling four-run win over Ireland in the second T20I to seal the two-match series on Tuesday. India made three changes for the second T20I against Ireland, with Sanju Samson, Harshal Patel and Ravi Bishnoi getting a nod in the playing XI. As India captain Hardik Pandya announced the changes in the playing XI, the crowd present at the Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin went wild upon hearing Samson's inclusion in the team.
