NEW DELHI : Former India opener Gautam Gambhir was appointed head coach of the country's cricket team on Tuesday, succeeding former teammate Rahul Dravid in what is considered one of the most challenging jobs in the game.
The Indian cricket team's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign concluded with a victory against South Africa in the final. The result helped Rohit Sharma's men end their 11-year wait for an ICC title, with the 2013 Champions Trophy win being the team's last. Elated with the results, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a big reward for the Indian team and its support staff, putting aside INR 125 crore for the victorious 42-member contingent that wen to the United States of America and West Indies.
Team India returned home on Thursday after winning the T20 World Cup last week. From New Delhi to Mumbai, the Indian cricket team received raucous reception from the fans. After meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital, the team left for Mumbai in the evening to celebrate the T20 World Cup triumph with the fans. The players and support staff members were all welcomed by fans, with an open bus parade on their way to the Wankhede Stadium, where a separate ceremony was organised to felicitate the team.
Former Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid won hearts when he decided to forego half of the Rs 5 crore prize money which he was supposed to get from the pool of Rs 125 crore that the team received from BCCI for winning the T20 World Cup 2024 title. From the total prize money of Rs 125 crore given to the team, Dravid was supposed to get Rs 5 crore while other coaches were going to get Rs 2.5 crore each. However, Dravid took the decision to take the same amount as his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip and batting coach Vikram Rathore). While Dravid was lauded by fans for his gesture, a report revealed that it was actually India captain Rohit Sharma who first offered to forego his prize money to make sure all the support staff were rewarded well.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday named World Cup-winning opening batter Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team. It was a much anticipated news as Gambhir was the front runner to replace ex-India head coach Rahul Dravid in the post. Dravid's tenure had come to an end after India's T20 World Cup triumph last month. Gambhir was the not the only candidate for the role of India head coach as the BCCI also interviewed ex-India batter WV Raman. The board eventually selected Gambhir for the post.
The India's tour of Sri Lanka will be starting from July 26 onwards, with the tour starting with a three-match T20I series. The tour will also consist of a three-match ODI series, which will kickstart from August 1 onwards. The Pallekele International Stadium will be hosting the T20I leg of the series while the R Premadasa is getting to host the 50-over matches, announced BCCI. The first T20I will take place on July 26, followed by the second one on July 27 and the final one on July 29.
India wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan has opened up on him taking a break from international cricket, which led to his ouster from the team. Kishan last played for India during the third T20I of a five-match series against Australia in November last year. He was then named in the subsequent tour of South Africa, but opted out of the Test series due to personal reasons. After taking a short break, Kishan also decided to skip Ranji Trophy matches, which led to the BCCI removing him from the central contracts list.

The cut for head coach Rahul Dravid came out to be INR 5 crore while the other coaches in the team were to be given Rs. 2.5 crore.
