Cautious Team India devised T20 World Cup blueprint in February

Coach Dravid, captain Rohit identified player pool with like-for-like backups and assigned series to each cricketerDUBAI: Head coach Rahul Dravid had a long, intense chat with Virat Kohli during India's practice session on Friday evening. An hour earlier, Ravindra Jadeja had been ruled out of the remainder of the Asia Cup due to a recurring knee injury. Dravid has been always meticulous in his planning. He doesn't like leaving anything to chance. In a larger context, Jadeja's departure from the Asia Cup may be seen as a jolt to India's preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup. But Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma had already prepared a blueprint for the pool of players in February. The frequent rotation of players in the past six months may seem jarring to a lot of people but most of it was pre-planned. "The captain and coach had sat down with the strength and conditioning coach and the physios in February. They had marked the entire year's schedule. Rohit and Dravid had given them a pool of players. The support staff was told to ensure those players are available and in the best shape for theT20 World Cup. Thus, each series was marked for the players to play in," a source told TOI. While all the attention was on India's probable top 15 players, the team management was actually working towards like-for-like options for every player. In effect, the team management had been looking at about 30 players. The team management has stood firm with its plans.

Rohit Sharma - Rahul Dravid - Suryakumar Yadav sets benchmark in build-up to T20 World Cup - timesofindia.indiatimes.com - India - Hong Kong - Hong Kong

Suryakumar Yadav sets benchmark in build-up to T20 World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav was still spreading the joy as he walked in for the press conference after his spectacular 26-ball 68 against Hong Kong. India’s T20 stalwart looks like he is having a ball when he is out in the middle these days, and even during the 11-minute interaction, he wore a charming smile right through. Surya’s unbeaten knock came against a team comprising a bunch of semi-professionals, but still, his dominance was impressive. As he propelled India to a target that was beyond the batting credentials of Hong Kong, Virat Kohli bowed to him and decided to walk behind Surya back to the dressing room. Kohli, a man used to playing eye-catching knocks and grabbing the spotlight, was nearly lost in the shadow of Surya’s brilliance. For a man grinding back into form, Kohli was astounded by Surya’s nonchalance while dismissing the disciplined Hong Kong attack on a dual-paced pitch.

Asia Cup: Suryakumar, Kohli star as India beat Hong Kong by 40 runs to seal Super Four spot

Suryakumar Yadav demonstrated all the right things about his T20 batting while exposing everything that is not quite right with India’s top-three. Surya walked out to bat at the end of the 13th over with the scoreboard reading 94/2 after KL Rahul went for a 39-ball 36 and Virat Kohli still striking just about run-a-ball. When he walked off unbeaten with 68 runs to his name and Virat Kohli by his side with a 59 off 44, he had propelled India to 192/2. In doing so, Surya had put the game well beyond the spirited Hong Kong team who finished with 152/5 having cashed in on India’s two inexperienced bowlers Arshdeep Singh (1/44) and Avesh Khan (1/53). India’s head coach Rahul Dravid, wearing a particularly unamused look in the dugout, will go into the Super 4s with the same set of unresolved issues. As It HappenedThe pitch and Hong Kong’s inexperienced bowling looked non-conducive to the modern-day slam-bang T20 batting till the time Surya took strike. Captain Rohit Sharma’s dismissal for 21 off 13 earlier in the innings at mid-on was indicative of a double-paced pitch.

Asia Cup 2022, India vs Pakistan: Why Dinesh Karthik was preferred ahead of Rishabh Pant

Team management finds utility of 'Finisher Karthik' more valuable as India continue to experiment in run-up to T20 World CupDUBAI: An interesting thing happened during the team huddle before India started with their warm-ups, around an hour before the match against Pakistan here on Sunday. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, the oldest player in the team, was asked to address the team first. Former captain Virat Kohli followed with a few words before incumbent skipper Rohit Sharma finished the pep-talk session, which was moderated by head coach Rahul Dravid. Dravid had joined the team in the early hours of Sunday, flowing in late after having recovered from Covid-19. Thirty minutes later, Rohit announced at the toss that Karthik had been preferred ahead of Rishabh Pant, the more regular stumper and current toast of Indian cricket. The decision came as a surprise to many.
