John McEnroe says he has been impressed by Novak Djokovic's honest ambition to want to win 23 Grand Slam titles and be considered as the greatest men's player to ever play tennis. Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are currently tied on 22 Grand Slam titles each, but Djokovic has a great opportunity to move in front of the Spaniard at this year's French Open. Ad Djokovic is in the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros this year, while 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal is out with a hip injury that has kept him out since January.
Aryna Sabalenka hopes there is a demand for more women’s matches to be played in the evening sessions at the French Open after the second seed put on a show to beat Sloane Stephens. Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo has addressed the lack of women’s matches in the night sessions of the French Open. The competition was a week old when the first women’s match – Aryna Sabalenka v Sloane Stephens – finally took centre stage on Court Philippe-Chatrier as the late match. Ad It has created plenty of debate with Eurosport expert Mats Wilander describing the situation as “ridiculous”.
Novak Djokovic swept into the French Open quarter-finals for the 14th straight year on Sunday as world number one Carlos Alcaraz prepared for a tricky test against Italy's Lorenzo Musetti. Third seed Djokovic, who is chasing a record 23rd men's Grand Slam singles title at Roland Garros, ended the surprise run of Peruvian outsider Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets. Djokovic, a two-time champion in Paris, won 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 against the 94th-ranked Varillas to book a meeting with Russia's Karen Khachanov, the 11th seed who overcame Lorenzo Sonego in four sets. "I had never played my opponent before. I knew he was a clay court specialist and that I had to earn the victory. It was the best I played this week," said Djokovic.
