Rafael Nadal kick-started his bid for a 14th French Open title with a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 6-2 victory over Australian Jordan Thompson. The 13-time champion was looking to make an early statement at Roland-Garros after failing to pick up a single warm-up title on clay, with a recurring foot problem hampering his preparations.
Rafael Nadal's defensive play is legendary, and the Spaniard demonstrated why once more during his first-round match against Jordan Thompson at the 2022 French Open. Eurosport expert John McEnroe has described Carlos Alcaraz as «incredible» and spoken about Rafael Nadal's chances at the 2022 French Open. The tennis legend gave his thoughts on the rising star Alcaraz after his impressive straight-sets victory on day one at Roland-Garros, dispatching Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero, 6-4 6-2 6-0, to progress to the second round.
Novak Djokovic's coach has insisted Rafa Nadal is favourite to win the French Open. But Goran Ivanisevic has claimed it will be better to face the Spanish superstar in a blockbuster quarter-final than in the Roland Garros final.
