Lucknow Super Giants' new recruit Kyle Mayers says he has "shown his worth" after firing the opening salvo for his team with a scintillating 38-ball 73 in his very first IPL outing. His blazing knock set the platform for LSG's formidable total of 193 for six against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, before English speedster Mark Wood (5/14) blew away the opposition batters with his express pace at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium. "I have always dreamt about playing in the IPL. I got the opportunity today. In my mind I always wanted to get to a good start to show my ability and show my worth and I thought I did that," Mayers told reporters after his exploits on debut.

In their first match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Delhi Capitals lost to Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday. Batting first, LSG notched up 193/6 in 20 overs primarily due to a 38-ball 73 from IPL debutant Kyle Mayers. His innings was laden with seven sixes and two fours. It seemed like the West Indies player would become the maiden centurion of the IPL 2023, but a magical delivery by Axar Patel in the 12th over cut short his stay. The star left-arm spinner spun one in, that turned towards off after landing as Mayers stood stunned.
There is rarely a better sight in cricket than a pace bowler running in full throttle and rattling the stumps of a batter. The same happened during Delhi Capitals' first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday with Prithvi Shaw facing the music from LSG pacer Mark Wood. The fast bowler from England angled in a good length ball from wide of the crease in the fifth over of DC's innings, as they chased a 194-run target. Shaw had a big gap between bat and pad and his feet did not move either as the ball broke his defence. The stumps were rattled.
Mark Wood scarred the Delhi Capitals top-order with scorching pace as his five-wicket haul beautifully complemented debutant Kyle Mayers' superb 73 in Lucknow Super Giants' comfortable 50 run win in their IPL opener, in Lucknow on Saturday. Mayers, who got a chance to showcase his exploits because of Quinton de Kock's absence, hit seven sixes in his 38-ball knock which was largely responsible for solid 193/6 in 20 overs. In reply, Delhi Capitals managed only 143 for 9 with David Warner (56 off 48 balls) fight hardly being any sort of consolation.
After bowing out in the Eliminator last season, Lucknow Super Giants will be beginning their IPL 2023 campaign against Delhi Capitals on Saturday. The KL Rahul-led side, filled with the likes of Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Hooda, will now be joined by the explosive wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran. As Quinton de Kock the first few matches, it will be interesting to see that what will be the Playing XI for LSG in the opening encounter.
