Don't Make Olympic Qualification Primary Goal, Focus On Process: Pullela Gopichand

Chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand on Tuesday advised Indian players to not to obsess over Paris Olympic qualification, urging them to focus on the process without taking "unnecessary pressure". Paris berths will be sealed on April 28 when the Olympic qualification rankings are out with singles players inside the top 16 making the cut. "I think Olympics is still a long way. There are still about eight tournaments to play. I don't think it's right to go after that as a player," Gopichand told reporters. "I think it's too much pressure unnecessarily to start thinking about the race to Paris as a primary role.

HS Prannoy Battles His Way To Asian Games Medal, PV Sindhu Bows Out In Quarterfinals

A valiant HS Prannoy battled his way to the semifinals, becoming only the first Indian in 41 years to win a badminton medal in men's singles at the Asian Games but it was curtains for PV Sindhu in women's singles on Thursday. Playing with a taping on his lower back and a belt under his shirt, Prannoy battled severe back spasm to dish out a performance for the ages, outshining Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia 21-16 21-23 22-20 in the quarterfinals to assure India a second badminton medal at the ongoing Games. India had won a silver in men's team championships last Sunday.

PV Sindhu's Form Not A Concern, She Remains One Of India's Best: Pullela Gopichand

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu's lack of consistency after coming back from an injury should not be a cause of "concern", feels chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand. Sindhu suffered yet another first round exit on Tuesday when she lost to world number 1 Akane Yamaguchi in the Singapore Open. "She's very young in saying that she's just 26-27. It's a good age, there is no reason for concern," Gopichand told PTI in a virtual interaction. A silver medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics and bronze winner in the Tokyo Games, Sindhu suffered an ankle injury in August last year to be slipped out of top-10 in the BWF women's singles rankings. She remained out of action for four months because of that injury.
