Jay Monahan is the man behind the scenes, the string puller, but the PGA Tour commissioner was thrust front and centre when the LIV Golf Series kicked off. All scenarios were hypothetical until a ball was struck. Within half an hour of the tee shots in St Albans, Monahan issued a statement saying all players taking part in LIV Golf would be suspended from the PGA Tour.
The only exceptions were Collin Morikawa, who had played just one Major before his PGA Championship win in 2020 (a solid but unspectacular top 40), and Phil Mickelson, who succeeded Morikawa and was apparently in his golfing dotage.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan described the Saudi-funded league that has signed up Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau as a "series of exhibition matches" that spends billions of dollars on players without getting a return on its investment.
The PGA Tour's reaction to the LIV Golf Invitational Series has been pretty clear, with Commissioner Jay Monahan banning all players who are teeing it up in the Saudi-backed LIV series and those who play in future events.
