Simona Halep is set for a spell away from tennis after undergoing nose surgery. The two-time Grand Slam champion says she has been “struggling for a while with nose problems” which made it “hard to breathe”. Ad Halep, 30, won the Canadian Open this summer but suffered a shock first-round defeat to qualifier Daria Snigur at the US Open.
The historic decision to allow coaching at the US Open for the first time has drawn a mixed response from players ahead of this year's tournament. Four years ago, Serena Williams erupted in fury during her US Open final defeat to Naomi Osaka after being penalised for receiving coaching from Patrick Mouratoglou. This year, however, the rule that sparked Williams' spectacular meltdown has been scrapped as part of a broader trial, meaning players can receive coaching advice from the stands.
Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev have both given their verdict on the ATP’s new off-court coaching trial ahead of their Cincinnati Open quarter-final, with the American calling it a “dumb rule”. The trial started in July and allows players to receive verbal and non-verbal instructions from a coach in a designated seat around the court. Ad Verbal coaching is only permitted when the player is at the same end of the court while non-verbal coaching, such as hand signals, is permitted at any time.
Simona Halep could be a doubt for the upcoming US Open after being forced to withdraw from the Cincinnati Open with a thigh injury. Halep had been due to play Veronika Kudermetova on Wednesday, but will now hand the latter a walkover to the last 16, where either Paula Badosa or Ajla Tomljanovic lie in wait.

Simona Halep says she hopes her Canadian Open triumph is the first of many titles herself and coach Patrick Mouratoglou win together. Halep beat Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3 2-6 6-3 in a dramatic final to win her 24th WTA title, and a first since coach Mouratoglou left Serena Williams to train with the Romanian. Ad Halep was initially overwhelmed by Haddad Maia as she lost the opening three games of the match.
