PERTH, Australia : Australia were well off the pace in Perth and have plenty to work on before the second test in Adelaide, captain Pat Cummins said after a 295-run thumping by India in the first test on Monday.

India gained a firm grip over the opening Test by reducing Australia to 12 for three at stumps on Day 3 after setting the hosts an imposing 534-run target, shaped by Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal's contrasting centuries in Perth Sunday. Marnus Labuschagne (3) was dismissed in the last ball of the day as Usman Khawaja was left stranded at the other end at the draw of stumps with the hosts still trailing by 522 runs. Skipper Jasprit Bumrah removed Nathan McSweeney (0) and Labuschagne, while Mohammed Siraj dismissed night watchman Pat Cummins (2) to cap off a dominant day for the visitors.

PERTH : Australia's bowling attack was left dejected at lunch on day three of the first test in Perth, as India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal cruised to 141 not out to help take his team to 275-1, and a 321-run lead, on Sunday.
Yashasvi Jaiswal looked like a man on a mission for India against Australia on Day 2 of the first Test. His defence was solid while he did shy away from taking his chances against the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and others. In between, he gave some cheeky replies to Australian bowlers too. At stumps on Day 2, Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting on 90 off 193 balls. His innings included seven fours and two sixes. With his two sixes Jaiswal now has 34 sixes in 2024 - the most maximums hit by any player in Test history.
The home team bowlers did not put a foot wrong but the pitch "surprisingly" dried up quite quickly at the Optus stadium on the second day, eventually helping the Indian batters, reckons Australia head coach Andrew McDonald. India openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (90) and KL Rahul (62) frustrated the hosts with their dogged unbeaten 172-run stand that has put the game in firm control of the visitors, who now lead by 218 runs. While the wickets fell in heap on the opening day with as many as 17 batters getting out, only three Australian tail-enders were dismissed on the second day. "The surface looked considerably dry today. It dried out fairly quickly," said McDonald during the post-day press conference.
