World champion high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi had some making up to do on Saturday after the Italian lost his wedding ring in the Seine river during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. His country's male flag-bearer, the ring slipped off Tamberi's finger as he enthusiastically waved the Italian tricolour during the boat parade in the Parisian rain on Friday. "I'm sorry, my love, I'm so sorry," the charismatic 32-year-old wrote on Instagram in a post dedicated to his wife, Chiara Bontempi Tamberi.
India vs New Zealand, Men's Hockey Olympics 2024 Pool B: India captain Harmanpreet Singh scored in the dying minutes to help India start their Paris Olympics 2024 hockey campaign with a 3-2 win against New Zealand on Saturday. It was a thriller right from the start, as India conceded many penalty corners. After Sam Lane scored for New Zealand, Mandeep Singh equalised for India. Vivek Sagar Prasad then gave India the lead, before Simon Child equalised. Harmanpreet Singh then scored from a penalty stroke in the 59th minute to make it 3-2 for India.
Medal contenders Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty signalled their intention with an easy straight-game victory in their opening group stage men's doubles match after singles ace Lakshya Sen got his maiden Olympic campaign underway on a winning note here on Saturday. The third-seeded duo of Satwik-Chirag, the reigning Asian Games champions, notched up a 21-17 21-14 win against the French pair of Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar in a Group C match while Sen beat Tokyo edition semifinalist Kevin Cordon of Guatemala 21-8 22-20 in a Group C contest of the men's singles.
