Indian boxer Nishant Dev expressed his disappointment after losing the men's 71kg quarterfinal match in the Paris Olympics against Mexico's Marco Verde Alvarez 1-4 despite fighting strongly throughout the clash. Nishant's debut Olympic campaign ended on Sunday after judges declared the Mexican as the winner. The Indian boxer performed better than his opponent in the first two rounds while the last round was evenly contested. The 23-year-old World Championship bronze medallist, who had previously defeated Alvarez in the 2021 World Championships, dominated the opening round and appeared in complete control during the second round, delivering a series of powerful jab hooks on the Mexican. However, the judges surprisingly awarded the second round to Alvarez, putting him ahead 3-2 in the tie.
American wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt has opened up on Indian grappler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Women's 50kg event at Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight, and was replaced by Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the bronze medal match. Hildebrandt defeated Guzman Lopez in the final to claim the gold medal in Women's 50kg event. Hildebrandt, also a bronze medallist from the Tokyo Olympic games, recalled the confusion that she experienced during the weigh-in, saying that she initially though Vinesh had forfeited.
Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali retained his Olympic 3000m steeplechase title on Wednesday to become just the third Arab to win double gold as world record holder Lamecha Girma suffered a worrying fall, at Paris Olympics 2024. El Bakkali timed 8min 06.05sec for victory with American Kenneth Rooks taking silver in 8:06.41 and Kenya's Abraham Kibiwot claiming bronze (8:06.47). Ethiopia's Girma was left prone on the track after falling at a hurdle before being eventually stretchered off.
