Camilla Rosatello, ranked No. 288 in the world, pulled off an opening-round upset of sixth-seeded American Alycia Parks 6-2, 6-3 at the Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole on Tuesday in Rouen, France.
No. 6 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia needed just 59 minutes to oust American Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open on Tuesday.
Coco Gauff stayed on course Sunday for a heavyweight Australian Open semi-final clash against Aryna Sabalenka, despite dropping a set for the first time this season. The world number three was not at her best but outlasted Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on the hottest day in Melbourne so far as temperatures hit 34 degrees Celsius (93 Fahrenheit). It set up a quarter-final against Spain's Paula Badosa, who a few minutes earlier swept past Serbia's Olga Danilovic 6-1, 7-6 (7/2).
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz can set up a blockbuster quarter-final when the Australian Open enters the fourth round on Sunday while Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are also eyeing a place in the last eight. Djokovic continues his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title against Czech 24th seed Jiri Lehecka in the prime-time evening match on Rod Laver Arena on Day 8 of the first Grand Slam of the year. The prize for the winner is a meeting with either Carlos Alcaraz or Britain's Jack Draper for a place in the semi-finals.
Jessica Pegula has backed Novak Djokovic's call for more entertainment for fans, saying tennis should become less "stuffy" and "uppity." Djokovic said after his third-round win at the Australian Open that tennis needs to be "more fun". He suggested even that dancers could be brought on court during breaks to appeal to a new 21st century generation. World number six Pegula agreed the game needed to jazz things up.
Donna Vekic said the lesson was to "never give up" after overcoming dark times to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon on Tuesday. The Croatian won 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to end the fairytale run of New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun and will face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini or US 19th seed Emma Navarro for a place in Saturday's final. Vekic, 28, had knee surgery at the start of 2021, and suffered further setbacks into the follow season, which she described as "very tough". Even this year, before the French Open, she was tempted to take a break from the tour. "I didn't have any energy, any motivation to keep practising, keep pushing because I felt like the last couple of months I've given everything for tennis, and I wasn't getting the results that I kind of expected," she said.
