PARIS: Kevin Magnussen on Wednesday (Mar 9) returned to the Haas Formula One team to replace Russian driver Nikita Mazepin who was sacked following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Danish driver Kevin Magnussen will return to Formula One with Haas this season as replacement for sacked Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, the US-owned team said on Wednesday (9 March).
Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, sacked by Formula One outfit Haas, is creating a foundation to help sportspeople who have found themselves barred from competing due to "political reasons out of their control". Mazepin and Haas's Russian title sponsor Uralkali had their contracts terminated last Saturday as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Mazepin's father Dmitry is a non-executive director of Uralkali, a group specialising in potash. Nikita Mazepin, 23, said the funds for the 'We compete as one' foundation would come from the money that Uralkali would have paid Haas.
Nikita Mazepin admits he heard about his sacking from Haas via the media and stressed that he was unfairly dismissed by the team. Sporting governing bodies were being put under increasing pressure to ban Russian competitors after the country’s invasion of Ukraine, but the FIA had a softer stance and were prepared to give Russian and Belarusian drivers neutral status.
