"My Job Is To Land Punches In The Ring": Boxer Nikhat Zareen After Progressing To CWG Finals

Reigning world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen on Saturday said her job was just to land punches on her opponents inside the ring and make the country proud. Nikhat, who stormed into the final of women's 50kg category after outclassing England's Stubley Alfia Savannah 5-0, said she can't wait to lay her hands on a second international gold in three months. "Mera kaam hai bas ring mein jaake mukke fekna aur desh ka naam roshan karna (My job is to land punches in the ring and make the country proud). I've to cool down and start again," Nikhat told PTI.

Reigning world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen stormed into the final of women's 48kg after outclassing England's Stubley Alfia Savannah, her exploits overshadowing even Amit Panghal's display in men's 51kg at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday. Nikhat, who won by a unanimous 5-0 verdict, started the semifinal on a confident note and dominated all the three rounds to emerge winner in the lop-sided bout. As expected, the 26-year-old Indian was in lead after the opening round with all the five judges ruling it in her favour, and it went on similar lines in the ensuing two rounds.

India boxer Nikhat Zareen on Wednesday progressed to the semi-finals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, assuring India of atleast a bronze medal. Zareen had produced a dominating performance to win 5-0 over Helen Jones of Wales in the light flyweight quarterfinals. After the win, Nikhat wished her mother a very happy birthday, and the video of the boxer wishing her mother has now gone viral on social media.

Three Indian pugilists, including Nikhat Zareen, advanced to the semifinals in their respective events after thrilling victories while Lovlina Borgohain made a last eight exit in the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. With their wins, Zareen (50kg), Nitu Ganghas (48kg) and Mohammed Hussamudin (57kg) assured India of three boxing medals. Olympic bronze medallist Borgohain, on the other hand, was out-punched by last edition's silver medallist Rosie Eccles of Wales.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Full Day 7 India Schedule

The sixth day of the ongoing Commonwealth Games saw Tejaswin Shankar winning a bronze in men's high jump finals while Indian women's hockey team progressed to the semi-finals after the side defeated Canada in their final Pool A game. On the other hand, the men's hockey team also defeated Canada 8-0 in Men's Pool B. Boxer Nitu Ghanghas also assured India of at least a bronze medal. The Indian women's cricket team have also entered the semi-finals after getting the better of Barbados in their final Group A match.

The Indian contingent added five medals on Day 6, one silver and four bronze, taking their total to 18 (5 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze). Shankar bagged the bronze medal to end the day on a high.

World champion Nikhat Zareen and young Sagar Ahlawat sailed into the quarterfinals in their respective weight categories at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. But, it was curtains for Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) and Sumit Kundu (75kg) as they made round of 16 exits. Zareen (56kg) knocked out Helena Ismael Bagao of Mozambique to storm into the last eight round of the women's lightweight category winning by RSC (Referee stopping contest).
