BCCI Loses Blue Tick Verification On 'X'

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) lost its blue tick verification on its ‘X' (Twitter) account after the cricket governing body in India changed its profile picture to the Indian flag in support of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign, launched ahead of India's 77th Independence Day, invites residents to display the Indian flag on their social media profiles. The BCCI honoured the request by changing its profile image to the tricolour.

Talisman Sunil Chhetri, senior defender Sandesh Jhingan and first-choice goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu were on Tuesday named in a 22-member Indian men's football squad for the upcoming Asian Games. In Hangzhou, China, the host city for the Games, the Indian squad will be under the charge of national senior team head coach, Igor Stimac. The participation of the Indian men's and women's football sides in the Hangzhou Games was earlier in doubt as per the sports ministry's criteria of sending teams which are ranked in top-8 in the continent.

The Indian men's football team has been clubbed with China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar for the Hangzhou Asian Games in a relatively easy Group A, while the women have Thailand and Chinese Taipei in Group B. The draw was conducted in Hangzhou on Thursday. The Indian men's and women's football teams' participation at the quadrennial extravaganza was confirmed after the Sports Ministry decided to relax the existing selection criteria. There are six groups in the men's competition. The top two teams from each group and four best third-placed teams will advance to the round of 16.

The football fraternity of India was on cloud nine on Wednesday after the sports ministry gave a clearance to both men's and women's team to participate in the upcoming Asian Games. The continental event will be held in Hangzhou, China, starting from September 23. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had earlier refused to clear the Indian football teams for the Asian Games on the ground that they were not ranked in the top-8 in Asia. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) then made an appeal to the Sports Ministry to allow the men's and women's sides to take part in the prestigious event.

Fearing Injury, Asian Games Trials Winners Request Time Till August 20 To Prepare For World Championship Trials

The wrestlers, who recently won the Asian Games trials, have requested the IOA ad-hoc panel and the Sports Ministry to not conduct the World Championship trials before August 20, saying repeating the painful and tedious process of weight-loss could lead to injuries ahead of the big-ticket event. Mansi Ahlawat (women's 57kg), who shocked World Championship medallist Sarita Mor in the trials on July 22, Vishal Kaliraman (men's 65kg), Aman Sehrawat (men's 57kg), Pooja Gehlot (women's 50kg), Vicky (men's 92kg), Sunil (Greco Roman 87kg ) and Narinder Cheema (Greco Roman 97kg) have all made a similar request.

With the Indian football team set to miss out on the Asian Games participation for the second season in a row, head coach Igor Stimac has decided to make an emotional plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. Stimac penned an emotional letter, urging the Indian government to allow the Sunil Chhetri-led side to participate in the continental event. It was earlier reported that the team is unlikely to be sent for Asian Games participation as its current ranking is not among the top 8 sides in Asia.
