ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported last week that the Los Angeles Lakers had targeted UConn's Dan Hurley as their next head coach, two months after he'd led the Huskies to their second consecutive national title and sixth championship in 25 years. Twenty years ago, the Lakers made a similar pitch to Mike Krzyzewski, who rejected the offer to remain at Duke. The franchise received the same answer from Hurley on Monday.
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The UConn Huskies and the Purdue Boilermakers.
Sweet 16. Second weekend. Regional semifinals. Whatever you call it, we've made it to this point. Just about one-quarter of the field is left, and we can all take a breath. Some of how we got here was expected: No. 1 seeds UConn and Purdue did UConn and Purdue things; North Carolina kept hammering home why it deserved that 1-seed, while Houston has us wondering if it is in fact the weakest of the top four teams. (This is the first time since 2019 that all four 1-seeds and all four 2-seeds made it out of the first weekend — just the fifth time since the field went to 64 teams in 1985.)
It's fewer than 24 hours until the NCAA men's college basketball tournament tips off and March Madness begins in earnest, with the first game scheduled for 12:15 p.m. ET on Thursday. In the days since the bracket was revealed, ESPN's team of analysts — including Jeff Borzello, Myron Medcalf, Joe Lunardi, John Gasaway, Paul Hembekides and Keith Lipscomb — has been tirelessly dissecting the bracket and producing tens of thousands of words to help you be smarter and more informed about filling out yours. But as time gets short, do you have time to read it all? Probably not. But don't worry, that's why cheat sheets were invented.
The penultimate weekend before the NCAA tournament is always one of the most fun on the college basketball calendar. There's a mix of regular-season contests, conference tournament action, high-profile showdowns and automatic bids being handed out.
Thirty-two men's Division I college basketball conferences will begin the process of crowning their tournament champions. The action of Champ Week begins Monday, March 4, with the first round of ASUN games. It will end March 17, with five conference tournament finals — the Ivy League, Atlantic 10, SEC, American and Big Ten — mere hours before the NCAA selection committee unveils the 68-team bracket for the 2024 NCAA tournament.
At this time a year ago, few people outside the Big 12 knew about Markquis Nowell. The 5-foot-8 point guard was a key player for Kansas State, but he hadn't played particularly well in some of the team's biggest games and struggled in his team's first-round loss to TCU in the Big 12 tournament.
