Max Verstappen won the Formula One Italian Grand Prix on Sunday to leave himself in touching distance of his second straight Formula One title. Championship leader Verstappen claimed his first win at Monza and his fifth GP in a row after fighting from seventh on the grid to beat Charles Leclerc over the line on another difficult day for Ferrari. The Red Bull driver is 116 points ahead of Leclerc in the drivers' standings after winning a race whose final six laps were run with the safety car after Daniel Ricciardo lost his engine and ended up at the side of the track.
Monza have sacked coach Giovanni Stroppa, the Serie A club announced on Tuesday after a poor start to their first Serie A season left them bottom of the table.
Alex Albon will miss the Formula One Italian Grand Prix this weekend after coming down with appendicitis, his team Williams announced on Saturday. "Williams Racing can confirm that, after feeling unwell this morning and seeking medical advice from the FIA and local hospital, Alex Albon is now undergoing treatment for appendicitis," the team said in a statement. "Alex is in good spirits and the team wishes him a speedy recovery."
Ferrari chairperson John Elkann believes the iconic Italian team will return to Formula One's summit within the next four years after becoming Red Bull's closest challengers this season.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc took pole for the Italian Grand Prix after topping the times in qualifying at Monza on Saturday. Leclerc finished 0.145 seconds ahead of championship leader Max Verstappen after posting his fastest lap on his final shot around the Temple of Speed to claim his eighth pole of the season. "Very happy with the lap, very happy with the performance, it's been great weekend... I really hope we can finish just like in 2019," said Leclerc, who won here three years ago.
