SYDNEY :All-rounder Beau Webster will make his test debut for Australia in place of the dropped Mitchell Marsh in the fifth test against India on Friday, captain Pat Cummins said on Thursday.
Out-of-form all-rounder Mitch Marsh was axed Thursday from Australia's team for the series-deciding fifth Test against India in Sydney with Beau Webster to make his debut. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc retained his place for Friday's match despite carrying a rib niggle and will line up in the attack alongside Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon. "Mitchy obviously hasn't quite got the runs or wickets he would have liked this series and felt like it was time for a freshen up," said skipper Cummins.
Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey believes pace spearhead Mitchell Starc will "push through" the pain of a rib injury to play the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series here beginning on Friday. The 34-year-old left-hand quick's fitness remains the primary worry for the hosts after he battled through sore ribs from day three of the Boxing Day Test but still managed to bowl effectively with help from the team's physios. "He'll be fine. He will push through," Carey told the media on Wednesday.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey has backed Mitchell Starc to be ready for the decisive fifth and final test of the series against India when it starts in Sydney on Friday despite doubts over the fast bowler's fitness.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has criticised the Indian cricket team for its selection for the fourth Test vs Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Rohit Sharma and co. had dropped Shubman Gill for the game at MCG to make place for spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar. India went on to suffer a 184-run defeat in the game as the batters failed to even take the game to a draw. Disappointed with the result, Majrekar pointed out that India shouldn't have dropped Gill.
The bail-switching antics returned in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the final day of a gripping fourth Test between India and Australia. On Monday morning, it was all happening at the MCG. A battle for survival, wickets falling, and textbook strokes to pick up boundaries took centerstage. However, in the midst of all events, a small exchange of bail took place, but this time, it was a change in faces with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mitchell Starc having a go at it.
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald conceded that Mitchell Marsh has fallen short of expectations with the bat against India but remained optimistic about Mitchell Starc's availability for the pivotal fifth Test in Sydney. Starc's fitness remains the primary worry for the hosts after the pacer battled through sore ribs from day three of the Boxing Day Test but still managed to bowl effectively, including claiming the prized wicket of Virat Kohli on the final day.
