Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios fought off six match points during a second-set tiebreaker against hometown favourite Frances Tiafoe, then raced past him in the third set to win 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 at the Citi Open on Friday night.
The Wimbledon runner-up appeared set for an exit when Tiafoe set up an opportunity to serve for the win during the second set tiebreaker, but Kyrgios won the point and saved four more chances on his own serve to frustrate the American. The mercurial Australian won the last three points of the tiebreaker to force a deciding third set, which he dominated with his precise heavy service to seal the contest at around 1 a.m. local time.
Nick Kyrgios came through an extremely challenging contest with Frances Tiafoe where he saved an incredible five match points in the second-set tiebreak to set up a semi-final clash at the Citi Open with Mikael Ymer. Kyrgios made his singles draw return to the ATP Tour this week for the first time since reaching the Wimbledon final last month.
Top seed Andrey Rublev won twice on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the ATP and WTA Washington Open, dispatching Americans Maxime Cressy and J.J. Wolf at the US Open tuneup.
Top-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia and recent Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios of Australia both won two matches on Friday to reach the semifinals of the Citi Open in Washington.
Third-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States retired in the third set on Thursday due to illness in searing conditions in Washington, allowing 16th-seeded Daniel Evans of Great Britain to advance to the quarterfinals of the Citi Open.
Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, whose refusal to be vaccinated against Covid makes him unable to enter Canada, has officially withdrawn from the ATP hardcourt tournament in Montreal, organizers said Thursday. The Serb star's unvaccinated status made it unlikely he would play in the prestigious ATP Masters tournament, just as it means he will probably miss the US Open starting later in August as the United States also requires visitors to the country to show proof of vaccination. Montreal Masters tournament director Eugene Lepierre had said earlier this month he did not expect Djokovic to play.
