PARIS: France striker Karim Benzema won the Ballon d’Or at a ceremony in Paris on Monday, the reward coming after his stunning performances helped Real Madrid win the Champions League and La Liga last season. Benzema, who is the first French winner of the most prestigious individual prize in football since Zinedine Zidane in 1998, scored 44 goals in 46 games for his club including 15 in the Champions League.

The 2013 Ballon d’Or will go down as one of the most controversial years in the award’s history as Franck Ribery was “robbed”. Cristiano Ronaldo won his second Ballon d’Or, five years on from his first title, with Lionel Messi finishing as the runner-up and Ribery in third. Ad Ronaldo won 27.99 per cent of the vote, Messi 24.72 and Ribery 23.36.
The Ballon d’Or is back with the 2022 ceremony for the most prestigious football award taking place this coming Monday in Paris. Since 1956, one footballer has been honoured with the Ballon d’Or each year with 64 players winning the prize.
The news came as UEFA met its member associations on Saturday in Frankfurt where the future of the men's and women's European Championships and their respective qualifiers was discussed. "UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin took the opportunity to personally thank all 55 associations for their letters of support for the next elections received in recent weeks, confirming officially that he will run for another mandate at the upcoming UEFA Congress in Portugal in 2023," UEFA said.
