Career at crossroads, Mayank Agarwal returns to basics

Mayank Agarwal worked on his batting. The intensity was ferocious, although he did pause when players like Umran Malik stopped by to greet him. Nor did he miss congratulating them on their call-up for the upcoming red-ball series against New Zealand ‘A’. But deep down he was hurting. It’s been a tough year for the 31-year-old. He hasn’t played for the country since the day-night Test against Sri Lanka in March and as skipper of Punjab Kings, he turned in a sub-par 196 runs in 12 innings in the Indian Premier League. Mayank’s international career is at a crossroads, but rather than brood over what could have been, the talented batsman is determined to make a strong comeback. He has chosen to channel his energy towards working on his flaws. The goal is to be back in India colours. The Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament offered him just the platform that he needed – the confidence-building kind. Captain of the Kalyani Bengaluru Blasters, Mayank is currently the leading runs scorer with 480 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 167.24. This includes two centuries and a half-century. What’s more, he has been a revelation as captain. “I’m very happy with my performance and the way I’m batting,” he said. “I’ve been able to contribute to the team’s success.”

IPL: Punjab Kings quash rumours on possible change in captaincy

Indian Premier League (IPL) runners-up Punjab Kings on Thursday quashed rumours about possible change in captaincy of the side ahead of the next season of the league. Earlier this week, speculations were rife in the media that Mayank Agarwal, the captain of the side in IPL 2022, would be replaced by England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow. "News reports published by a certain sports news website pertaining to captaincy of the Punjab Kings franchise have been making the rounds in the last few days. We would like to state that no official of the team has issued any statement on the same," said the franchise in its statement. Ahead of the start of IPL 2022 season, Agarwal was appointed as the captain of Punjab Kings as KL Rahul took the same role with debutants Lucknow Super Giants.

"I'm Somebody Who Isn't Going To Give Up": Mayank Agarwal On India Future

Mayank Agarwal's international career got off to a flyer as he played a big role in India winning their first ever Test series in Australia in 2018-19. However, three years on, he has been pushed down the pecking order in Tests as well as ODIs, and he is yet to get a T20I cap. A dismal IPL 2022 campaign did not help his cause either. But the 31-year-old is determined to keep pushing and make a comeback for the national team.

Ranji Trophy: UP bowlers Shivam Mavi, Saurabh Kumar Restrict Karnataka to 213/7 on Day 1

Shivam Mavi and Saurabh Kumar shared seven wickets between them as Uttar Pradesh reduced hosts Karnataka to 213 for seven on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match Alur, Karnataka on Monday. Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Mavi caused maximum damage and broke the back of Karnataka's batting, grabbing the two big wickets of Mayank Agarwal (10) and Karun Nair (29) en route to his fine spell of 11-4-40-3. Electing to field after the start was delayed due to wet outfield, Uttar Pradesh got off to a perfect start but Mavi dismissed Agarwal cheaply to prolong the Indian Test opener's lean patch.
