SUZUKA, Japan :Red Bull new recruit Yuki Tsunoda has been told to get as close to his world champion teammate Max Verstappen as possible at the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend and he certainly delivered in the first practice session on Friday.

McLaren's championship leader Lando Norris said Thursday ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix that it was "our turn" to have Formula One's best car. McLaren have been the team to beat so far this season, with Norris winning the opening Australian Grand Prix before teammate Oscar Piastri led him in a one-two finish in China. Red Bull have dominated F1 in recent years, with Max Verstappen winning the drivers' championship for the past four seasons. Britain's Norris believes McLaren are now faster and he intends to prove it again this weekend at Suzuka.
Yuki Tsunoda vowed on Thursday to bring "something different" to Red Bull after his sudden promotion ahead of his home Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. The Japanese driver was catapulted into the Red Bull hot seat alongside four-time world champion Max Verstappen last week when he replaced the underperforming Liam Lawson two races into the season. Tsunoda will make his Red Bull debut at Suzuka, with Lawson swapping places to return to sister team Racing Bulls (RB).

Max Verstappen has hinted that he disagreed with Red Bull’s decision to axe Liam Lawson after just two races.
Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport advisor, has admitted that the team may have "made a mistake" in their handling of Liam Lawson's promotion and subsequent demotion after just two races in the 2025 Formula 1 season. Lawson, who had been given the seat alongside Max Verstappen after Sergio Perez's exit, was dropped following disappointing performances in Australia and China. He has now been sent back to Red Bull's junior team, Racing Bulls, in a swap with Japan's Yuki Tsunoda. Speaking about the decision, Marko acknowledged that the team's approach might not have been ideal. "His performance was unfortunately not good enough, and that comes from self-confidence," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We were worried that his confidence was so damaged that he couldn't bring his normal performance."
