Formula One debuted its new generation of cars in pre-season testing in Barcelona this week, and in the end it was still Mercedes and Red Bull dominating. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest overall time with Mercedes at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit on Friday, ahead of teammate George Russell and the Red Bulls of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen. The Mercedes duo set their times on softer — and faster — tires. Hamilton said they were some “interesting few days” of testing. “It's not been the easiest or smoothest running, we have some obstacles to overcome," he said. “The car is a lot different to drive than in previous years, as are the tires, but we're working our way through our program. The whole team has done an amazing job this week. ... We've got a lot of data to go through from these three days and we'll just put one foot in front of the other and put in the work.”
Lewis Hamilton laid down an early marker ahead of the new Formula One season on Friday when he set the fastest time in pre-season testing in Barcelona. In a further boost for Mercedes, Hamilton's new teammate George Russell came home in second place. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen was fourth fastest, just behind Red Bull colleague Sergio Perez. Hamilton, controversially edged out for the 2021 title by Verstappen in the season finale in Abu Dhabi, clocked a best time of 1min 19.138 seconds.
The first pre-season test of a new era of Formula 1 ended on Friday, and a glance at the timesheets might suggest very little has changed.
Formula One will not race in Russia this season, saying it was «impossible» to do so after the country launched an invasion on neighbouring Ukraine.
Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of the opening Barcelona pre-season test on a red-flag disrupted Friday to return to the top of the Formula One timesheets ahead of new team mate George Russell who completed a one-two for Mercedes.
