It didn’t take long for Henrik Stenson’s decision to join the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series to pay off handsomely.
Henrik Stenson, stripped of the European Ryder Cup captaincy after joining the breakaway LIV Golf circuit, shook off the controversy to win the LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster on Sunday.
Henrik Stenson said he "played like a captain" to win the LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster on his debut, 10 days after being stripped of the Ryder Cup captaincy over his decision to join the new series.
A little over a week on from being stripped of the Ryder Cup captaincy, Henrik Stenson hogged the headlines once again after taking victory in the third LIV Golf event in Bedminster. The Swede’s move to LIV caused huge controversy, after he said in March when taking the Ryder Cup captaincy that he had no intention of jumping ship. Ad/> Four months on, he was a LIV player — and admitted the move was motivated by money.
Henrik Stenson’s decision last week to sign up with the Saudi rebel circuit and so all but force Ryder Cup Europe to strip him of the captaincy was hugely controversial. Yet nobody can deny it was also outrageously lucrative, with a remarkably quick yield.
Joining LIV Golf may have cost Henrik Stenson the Ryder Cup captaincy, but it paid off immediately as the former Open champion secured a bumper payday on his debut in the Saudi-backed breakaway.
