Novak Djokovic: Why Indian Wells withdrawal could help world No. 1 achieve rare tennis feat

Novak Djokovic’s absence from the Sunshine Swing could yet prove a blessing in disguise, claims Eurosport expert Mats Wilander. On Monday it was confirmed that the Serb would miss Indian Wells – and likely the Miami Open — in another twist to the saga around his vaccination status. Ad It means the 35-year-old can effectively start preparing for the clay-court season and Roland-Garros, where he will aim to surpass Rafael Nadal in the all-time men’s standings with his 23rd Grand Slam title, and continue his hunt for the Calendar Grand Slam.

Rafael Nadal's 'biggest enemy' named – and it’s not a player

Eurosport expert Mats Wilander believes Rafael Nadal is more mentally strong and tactically adept than at any point in his career – but said his movement on court would likely prove “his biggest enemy”. Nadal, who has not competed since losing in the Australian Open second round in January, has been tormented by injury in 2023 and pulled out of Indian Wells and the Miami Open with a hip complaint last month. Ad Wilander has no doubt that he has the game to compete with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz for tennis’ biggest prizes, but said the 36-year-old may be hampered by his speed around the court.

Former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev Crashes Out Of Australian Open After Losing To Sebastian Korda In 3rd Round

Sebastian Korda stunned two-time losing finalist Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open on Friday, adding the Russian to a growing list of top seeds crashing out early. The 31st-ranked American, son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda, blasted past the seventh seed 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Rod Laver Arena to race into the last 16. Korda's upset teed up a clash with Polish 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz -- who battled past Canada's Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 -- for a place in the quarter-finals.

British tennis chiefs slam ATP over $1m fine for Russia player ban

LONDON: British tennis chiefs said Wednesday they were “disappointed” at being fined $1 million by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for banning Russian and Belarusian players from its events. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) came under pressure from the British government to impose a ban. The LTA stages five events — Queen’s Club in London, Eastbourne, Surbiton, Nottingham and Ilkley — in the calendar of the ATP, which runs the men’s professional tennis tour outside of the four Grand Slams.
