Ding Junhui comprehensively beat an underwhelming Mark Allen 10-5 at the Bonus Arena in Hull to reach the Tour Championship semi-finals. In the first session, top seed Allen had done well to keep the deficit to just two frames, with two-half centuries scored.
Anyone who predicted that not one of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Judd Trump, John Higgins or Mark Williams would be in Hull deserves either a pat on the back or equal billing at Derren Brown’s next stage show. These star names have between them reached only one ranking final all season: Trump lost to Mark Allen in the World Grand Prix’s title match in January. The build-up to the upcoming Snooker World Championship continues with the penultimate ranking event of the season. The 2023 Tour Championship will see the top eight players on the one-year ranking list heading to the Bonus Arena in Hull for the event.
Jimmy White recorded one of his best victories in the last decade after knocking out Judd Trump in third round of the WST Classic in Leicester.
Shaun Murphy's recent golden run was brought to a shuddering halt as he slipped to a 4-3 defeat to world No. 111 James Cahill in the last 64 of the WST Classic in Leicester. Murphy is guaranteed to be part of the elite eight-man Tour Championship at the end of the month in Hull (March 27 — April 2), but could not maintain his winning touch on Monday at the Morningside Arena.
Former world champions Neil Robertson and Stuart Bingham advanced to round two of the inaugural World Snooker Tour Classic in Leicester.
Neil Robertson made a winning start to the WST Classic in Leicester on Thursday courtesy of a 4-2 victory over Luke Simmonds that included two trademark century breaks. The 2010 world champion enjoyed knocks of 100, 99, 61 and 103 as he overpowered the former Cornwall professional, who restored parity at 1-1 with a run of 67 in the second frame, to secure a last-64 encounter with Oliver Lines at the Morningside Arena. Ad Robertson needs to win the inaugural WST Classic to have any chance of qualifying and defending the Tour Championship in Hull at the end of the month, an event he has won twice over the past two years.
