PARIS: Taylor Fritz of the United States stayed in contention for one of the two remaining ATP Finals spots by beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the Paris Masters on Monday. The ninth-seeded Fritz rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the opening set and took the second by winning the last four games. Davidovich Fokina made 24 unforced errors to just nine for Fritz.

The 24-year-old rose three places to eighth in the rankings released on Monday following his victory over compatriot Frances Tiafoe. Jack Sock was the last American to break into the top 10 in November 2017. Tiafoe's consolation for losing to Fritz is his highest ever ranking of 17th.

Novak Djokovic admits he is physically fresh and “mentally motivated” for the final part of the season as he beat Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the Astana Open. Djokovic won 6-3 6-1 with another impressive display and will play Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals after the Russian knocked out Marin Cilic in three sets.
