RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s first ever Alpine skier Fayik Abdi on Sunday afternoon completed his historic participation in the giant slalom competition at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Real snow finally arrived at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and disrupted events on Sunday, leading to mixed fortunes for the Alpine skiiers who were breaking new ground for their countries in difficult conditions.
Arif Khan, finished 45th in the giant slalom event on Sunday. The 31-year-old from Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir clocked a combined time of 2 minute 47.24 seconds from two races in difficult weather conditions at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre. Khan, who was making his Winter Olympics debut, ended at 53rd in Race 1 with a time of 1:22.35 out of the 54 competitors who could finish it.

Marco Odermatt fulfilled his billing as a favourite for gold in the event as he coped best with the extremely challenging conditions to win the title, but there were an unfortunate host of big crashes. Already a superstar in his own country with his face plastered over advertising everywhere you look, Marco Odermatt is now set for megastar status after winning the men's giant slalom event at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre on Sunday (13 February) in a combined time of 2:09.35 from the two runs. Lara Gut-Behrami won the same discipline for Switzerland in the women's event on Friday (11 December) with Beat Feuz also winning the men's downhill to give Switzerland three gold medals in Alpine skiing so far at Beijing 2022.
