Lalit Upadhyay, 4 Other Forwards Miss Out As India Name Team For Asian Champions Trophy

Lalit Kumar Upadhyay is among the five forwards left out of the 18-member Indian men's hockey team for next month's Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai. Apart from Lalit, Abhishek, Pawan, Dilpreet Singh and Simranjeet Singh, who are all currently with the Indian squad in Spain gearing up for the the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation-International Tournament, also missed the cut for the prestigious tournament to be played at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium from August 3 to 12.

Veteran drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh, who recently came out of retirement, will lead India at the Asia Cup as Hockey India on Monday announced a 20-member team for the upcoming tournament in Jakarta. The prestigious event, which will be held from May 23 to June 1, is a World Cup qualifier. Senior players like Manpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and PR Sreejesh will give the tournament a miss.

India played out a goalless draw against England in an entertaining pool match to remain in contention for a direct quarterfinal berth in the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in Rourkela on Sunday. The players will report to the SAI Center in Bengaluru on Monday for a national camp ahead of FIH Pro League matches against New Zealand and Spain at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. The Indian men's and women's hockey teams, in a joint statement, have strongly refuted allegations made by former men's team coach Sjoerd Marijne against captain Manpreet Singh. The 48-year-old former Dutch player, according to a report in The Indian Express, has written in his soon-to-be-released book titled “Will Power” that skipper Manpreet had allegedly told a player "to stop playing so well because his friends were not able to get into the team.” According to the report, Marijne also wrote: “I don't know if Manpreet had said so as a joke, but it made me so furious.”

The eleven-member team showed their deep interest in visiting this monument of great national importance. With the inquisitiveness of knowing and learning about the glorious history of the country, the team took a tour around the monument and visited the Veerta Chakra (circle of bravery), Tyag Chakra (circle of sacrifice), Param Yodhdha sthal etc. Meanwhile, coming over the walls of Tyag Chakra, some of the team members said, "It is really a proud moment for us to see more than 26000 names of martyrs etched here and without missing the chance, we would like to offer our homage to the martyrs of Kargil War."
