Skipper Harmanpreet Singh and Varun Kumar scored two goals each as India thrashed China 7-2 to begin their Asian Champions Trophy hockey campaign on a winning note at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium here on Thursday. Harmanpreet (5th, 8th minutes) and Varun (19th, 30th) converted two penalty corners each for India, while Sukhjeet Singh (15th), Akashdeep Singh (16th) and Mandeep Singh (40th) were the other goal scorers. China's two goals came from the sticks of Wenhui E (18th) and Jiesheng Gao (25th). The Men in Blue were off to a resounding start in the opening quarter, as it took them just five minutes into the contest to earn a penalty corner, and skipper Harmanpreet made no mistake in successfully converting it. It did not too long for India to double the lead.

Riyan Parag dished out an all-round show to help East Zone hand a crushing 88-run loss to North Zone in the Deodhar Trophy on Friday. Parag first struck a whirlwind 131 from 102 balls (5x4, 11x6) in a 235-run sixth wicket partnership with Kumar Kushagra (98 off 87b, 8x4, 4x6) to power East Zone to a huge 337 for eight in 50 overs after they opted to bat. In the second half of the game, Parag returned to grab 10-1-57-4 with his leg spin to cap an impressive all-round show.

North Zone wicket-keeper Prabhsimran Singh pulled off a brilliant one-handed catch during the Deodhar Trophy match against South Zone to leave both experts and fans stunned. During the 39th over of the match, South Zone batter Ricky Bhui tried to play an unconventional shot off pacer Mayank Yadav but ended up miscuing it completely. The ball was travelling fast towards Prabhsimran but he pulled off a full-stretch dive to complete the catch. The video of the catch was shared by the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI) on Twitter and it has gone viral in no time.

Haryana all-rounder Jayant Yadav will lead North Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy after senior batter Mandeep Singh was ruled out of the tournament owing to an injury, convenor of zonal committee Anirudh Chaudhry said on Thursday. Punjab batter Nehal Wadhera, who has recently made an impression in IPL for Mumbai Indians and was in stand-by, has been named in the main squad.

Former India chairman of selector Chetan Sharma chaired the North Zone meeting for the team selection ahead of Duleep Trophy, according to media reports on Thursday. Sharma stepped down from his role earlier in 2023 amidst controversial circumstances but he was back in the role of selector. The meeting was also attended by representatives from various associations including cricket administrator Anirudh Chaudhry and reports claimed that Sharma represented the Haryana Cricket Association in the meeting which he chaired due to seniority.
