The 30-year-old Romanian, who returned to the All England Club this year for the first time since winning the grasscourt major in 2019, came into match having beaten Frech in both their previous meetings. Despite a stiff breeze blowing across Court two, Halep started in aggressive fashion to build up a 4-0 lead and although the 92nd-ranked Frech managed to get a break of serve back, it was not enough to stop her opponent from winning the first set. Playing her maiden third-round match at a major, Frech also cancelled out an early break at the start of the second set but Halep regained the lead immediately and celebrated with a clenched fist and repeated slaps on her thigh.

Polish top seed Iga Swiatek won her 37th consecutive match to advance to third round of Wimbledon on Thursday, beating Dutch lucky loser Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Swiatek, who has won her past six tournaments, including the French Open, broke three times in the first set as both players struggled to hold serve. A single break in the seventh game of the second set gave Pattinama Kerkhove the opening she needed to get back on level terms.
Kirsten Flipkens 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday to advance to the third round at the All England Club. Both players struggled to hold serve throughout their match on Court Two, with former world number one Halep breaking her Belgian opponent six times.

Sania Mirza's final Wimbledon appearance ended in disappointment as she and her Czech partner Lucie Hradecka were eliminated in the opening round with the Polish-Brazilian combination of Magdalena Frech and Beatroz Haddad Maia beating them 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a hard-fought three-setter. Sania would have ideally preferred to last a bit longer in her swansong at the SW-19 but she will undoubtedly remember hallowed lawns where she won her maiden doubles title alongside Martina Hingis, back in 2015.
