Iga Swiatek marked her first match as world number one with an 18th straight victory as she steered Poland closer to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals on Friday. The 20-year-old swept past 123rd-ranked Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1, 6-0 in just 55 minutes on the back of five service breaks as the Poles opened a 2-0 lead over Romania in their qualifier in Radom. Swiatek went into the qualifier on a hot streak, putting together 17 successive wins on her way to titles in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami.
Swiatek will play her first match as world number one when she leads Poland against Romania in the Billie Jean King Cup this weekend, desperate to improve her record on home ground. Swiatek, the first ever Pole to ascend to the top of the rankings, lost both singles matches she played the last time she appeared in front of her own crowd in a 2019 play-off against Ukraine. "The last couple of years have shown that it's not easy to play with your home crowd because it's the same kind of pressure you feel," said the 20-year-old on Thursday who was still outside the top 60 three years ago.
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Canada's Leylah Fernandez has been eliminated from the Charleston Open, falling to Poland's Magda Linette 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 32 Thursday.
Top-seeded Camila Osorio overcame her serving struggles on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Copa Colsanitas in Bogota, Colombia.
Defending champion Petra Kvitova and former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka have both bowed out of the Qatar Open through injury, on a day in which a host of favoured seeds advanced in Doha.
World number two Aryna Sabalenka is through to the Australian Open third round but third seed Garbine Muguruza suffered an early exit in Melbourne.
