Just 180 minutes. That’s how close Morocco, now preparing for Saturday’s last-eight showdown with Portugal, are to the World Cup final, how close the Arab region is to having a representative in the biggest game of the biggest sporting event there is and how close they are to shaking international football to its very foundations.
RIYADH: Defending champion Daniil Medvedev and world No. 10 Taylor Fritz will compete in the final at the Diriyah Tennis Cup presented by Aramco. The pair enjoyed semifinal wins over Stan Wawrinka and Cameron Norrie respectively on Friday at the Diriyah Arena and will now battle it out for the $1 million prize money.
LUSAIL, Qatar: Lionel Messi started the match by delivering another football clinic. The Argentina superstar ended it sporting a bloodied top lip, shouting abuse to opponents and even blasting the referee.
DOHA: Yet another World Cup has ended in tears for Neymar, with football's most expensive player hinting he may not pull on the Brazil shirt again following a painful defeat to Croatia.
Argentina come out victorious against the Netherlands while Croatia beat the mighty Brazil. Both games featuring last-minute equalisers with the eliminated coaches handing in their resignations.
Tite suggested his time as Brazil coach is over but defended his penalty tactics after they crashed out of the World Cup to Croatia. Marquinhos' decisive spot kick hit the post after Dominik Livakovic had saved Rodrygo's opening effort in the shootout to send Croatia into the last four with Neymar never getting a chance to step up. Croatia did not miss with Nikola Vlasic, Lovro Majer, Luka Modric, Mislav Orsic all scoring to send them through 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Neymar had given Brazil the lead in the first-half of extra time - the Paris St Germain star equalling Pele's Brazil scoring record with 77 FIFA-registered goals - only for Bruno Petkovic to level with three minutes left. But it was heartbreak for Neymar and Brazil with the striker due to go fifth in the shootout, yet there was no regret from Tite. He said: "The fifth is the decisive one, there is more pressure and the players who are more mentally prepared are the ones to take this last penalty kick. "The players know about my commitment and they know how proud I am of their performance. It's the entire team who loses.
DOHA: Croatia stunned Brazil in a dramatic penalty shootout on Friday to reach the semifinals of the World Cup after Marquinhos slammed the decisive kick against the post. Neymar looked to have kept Brazil’s hopes of a sixth World Cup title alive by starting and finishing a brilliant effort in extra time that equalled Pele’s international scoring record of 77 goals.
