Having been set 216 to win, Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh hammered 72 off 44 balls before batting partner David (31 not out) sealed a thrilling last-gasp victory. "I thought we were done, to be honest," admitted the relieved Marsh. "Timmy David is extremely calm and had a lot of confidence in his ability towards the end. We are very lucky to have him. It was a great game of cricket."
Tim David hit a four off the last ball to give Australia a nail-biting six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Twenty20 international in Wellington on Wednesday. Having been set 216 to win, Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh hammered 72 off 44 balls before batting partner David (31 not out) sealed a thrilling last-gasp victory. The three-match series is the last for both teams before the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies in June. Rachin Ravindra had earlier put New Zealand in the driving seat by hitting 68 runs off 35 balls to claim his first half-century in the format as the hosts finished on 215-3. Marsh finished with best bowling figures of 1-21 before leading the charge with the bat, hitting seven sixes and two fours in his unbeaten knock.
New Zealand strike bowler Trent Boult was recalled on Wednesday for the T20I series against Australia but the hosts will be without Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell. Boult is in a 14-man squad for the three-match series but only available for the last two games in Auckland, with fellow veteran seamer Tim Southee to play just the opening game, in Wellington on February 21. The 34-year-old Boult has been infrequently selected for international duty since being released from his New Zealand central contract in August 2022, allowing him to play in more domestic T20 leagues.
Pakistan's spinners ran through New Zealand to pick up a consolation 42-run win in the fifth and final Twenty20 international on Sunday and avoid a series clean sweep. The tourists lost the five-match series 4-1 but it ended on a positive note as they dismissed the Black Caps for a paltry 92 in defence of 134-8. Part-time offspinner Iftikhar Ahmed produced career-best figures of 3-24 as a weakened New Zealand batting lineup struggled against the turning ball and were skittled for their eighth-lowest T20 total.
New Zealand opener Finn Allen smashed a record-breaking 137 off 62 deliveries as New Zealand set Pakistan a 225-run target in the third T20I against Pakistan in Dunedin on Wednesday. In the process, Allen went past Brendon McCullum as the player with the highest score by a New Zealander in the shortest format of the game. Not only that, he also also equalled the world record of 16 sixes in an innings held by Afghanistan's Hazratullah Zazai. He hit Pakistan star Haris Rauf for 27 in an over.
The on-field spat between star India batter Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir during the IPL 2023 left everyone stunned. The incident took place on May 1 in Lucknow during the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants, where Kohli got indulged into a war of words with LSG pacer Naveen-ul-Haq. After the match ended, the things got heated up and Gambhir, who was the mentor of LSG, intervened in the support of Naveen, which led to an intense drama.
Legendary South African batter AB De Villiers believes that Royal Challengers Bangalore are still missing a quality spinner even after the IPL 2024 Auction. While reviewing RCB's performance in the auction, De Villiers pointed out that RCB released Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga ahead of the new season but they failed to buy a proper alternative who can prove to be a 'X factor'. He also mentioned veteran India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who was released by RCB in 2022 and Gujarat Titans star Rashid Khan while making his point that spin bowling is a department which has been a problem for the franchise.
