PARIS : Elena Rybakina shook off a sluggish start and continued her fine run on clay as the world number four moved into the second round of the French Open with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Czech qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova on Tuesday.
Elena Rybakina proved too strong for teenager Brenda Fruhvirtova, winning their first round French Open match 6-4 6-2. Fruhvirtova, 16, showcased her undeniable potential on her Roland-Garros debut, threatening an upset with an early break, but Rybakina proved too strong and can now look forward to playing Linda Noskova in the next round. Ad «She played really well, especially for me,» said Rybakina.
Former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza has confirmed that she will extend her break from tennis and miss both the clay and the grass-court seasons. Muguruza, 29, hasn’t played since losing to Czech teenager Linda Noskova 6-1 6-4 in the last 32 of the Lyon Open on January 30.
Garbine Muguruza is taking an extended break from tennis which will see her miss the clay and grass season this year, the former French Open and Wimbledon champion said on Monday.
Pam Shriver says Coco Gauff is an “exceptional” player who should win “plenty” of big titles over her career – but that her forehand still needs to be “solved”. Gauff turned 19 on March 13, hours after her straight-sets win over Linda Noskova in the third round of Indian Wells. Ad It was nearly four years ago that she burst onto the scene at Wimbledon when she came through qualifying and beat Venus Williams on her way to the fourth round.
Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari both came from a set down for the second time in as many matches at Indian Wells to reach the fourth round. Third seed Pegula followed up her opening win over Camila Giorgi with a 3-6 6-4 7-5 victory over 26th seed Anastasia Potapova. Ad Last year’s runner-up, Sakkari, came from a set and a break down to beat 27th seed Anhelina Kalinina.
INDIAN WELLS, California : Teen tennis star Coco Gauff on Friday stressed the importance of teaching a full version of history amid a debate in her home state of Florida over an African American studies course for U.S. high school students.
