John Lloyd on the British tennis boom
The first week of Wimbledon has been filled with shock exits and surprise winners. Yesterday saw British hopefuls Liam Broady, Katie Boulter and Heather Watson progress to the third round of the prestigious tennis tournament.
What will Liam Broady do with his £120,000 prizemoney for reaching the third round of Wimbledon? “I might just withdraw it all,” said Broady on Thursday night, “and just, like, lie on it.”
Liam Broady may be enjoying the best Grand Slam run of his career at Wimbledon, but the Brit will not see his just rewards in the men's rankings. Broady defeated No 12 seed Diego Schwartzman to reach the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
Katie Boulter managed to eliminate last year’s Wimbledon runner-up and sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in a career-best win to book her place in the third round. She won 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 on Centre Court to reach the third round in a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Ad/> In a tearful on-court interview, Boulter described the win as “a dream come true”.
