Pierre Gasly in an AlphaTauri topped the opening day of Formula One pre-season testing in Bahrain on Thursday with the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc filling out the top three. The three-day session is taking place at the same Sakhir circuit where the first race of the 2022 championship will be staged on March 20. Mercedes and Red Bull dominated the opening three-day test in Barcelona last month.
AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly recorded the fastest time at Day 1 of testing at the Bahrain Grand Prix circuit. Bahrain will hold the season’s first event on March 20 after the postponement of the usual campaign-starter, the Australian Grand Prix.
The new Formula One season has not even started and the bitter rivalry between Mercedes and Red Bull has already kicked into gear.

Formula One champions Mercedes were the talk of pre-season testing in Bahrain after turning up with a radically revised car that caught the eye and raised hackles at rivals Red Bull.
The Haas team was able to send out a car for the second session of Bahrain testing Day 1, after missing the first. Haas had freight problems which meant that they were awaiting a delivery to be able to get their car out on the track on Friday, and they did not receive the goods in time for the first run, meaning just nine drivers were out in force in the morning.
