Lewis Hamilton vowed to take the fight to Mercedes pair George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in Barcelona after securing his best qualifying result for Ferrari.
BARCELONA, June 13 : George Russell lapped fastest for Mercedes in final practice for Formula One's Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Saturday while championship-leading teammate Kimi Antonelli was only seventh on the timesheets and reprimanded for driving erratically.
MONTMELO, Spain: George Russell built confidence ahead of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix by topping the timesheets in the final practice session on Saturday. The Mercedes driver has endured some difficult weeks but has led the way in two of the three practice sessions at Montemelo. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri followed, two tenths of a second behind, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc third and 2025 champion Lando Norris fourth in the other McLaren. Lewis Hamilton was fifth but seven tenths down on Russell, ahead of Max Verstappen in sixth and championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Teenage sensation Antonelli, seeking a sixth straight Grand Prix triumph on Sunday, was left frustrated by traffic. The 19-year-old Italian’s first qualification simulation lap was spoiled by the slow moving Lance Stroll, and on his second there were several cars blocking his way. “Why do I always get traffic? I don’t understand,” he complained over team radio. In a slow start to the third practice session, only Cadillac duo Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez took to the track. Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg soon joined them. After around 20 minutes, several other riders came out of their garages, although the Mercedes, McLarens and Ferraris waited even longer to emerge on another hot, sunny day. Home fans were happy to see veteran Fernando Alonso, cheering him on from the grandstand named after the two-time world champion, ahead of what he says is probably his last race at Montmelo. Norris was fastest on Friday from Russell and Piastri, and he leapt to the top of the timesheets on Saturday with a lap of 1:16.609. Briton Russell, who has been overshadowed by team-mate Antonelli this season, responded with a time of 1:16:258 to go top.
BARCELONA, June 13 : Formula One leader Kimi Antonelli's quest to recover a winner's towel swiped by Kim Kardashian at the Monaco Grand Prix is over after the Mercedes driver received a replacement from Lewis Hamilton's celebrity friend.
Kim Kardashian has given a towel to Formula One driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli after she accidentally “stole” his at the Monaco Grand Prix.
BARCELONA, June 12 : Formula One champion Lando Norris put McLaren top of the practice timesheets at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Friday with George Russell looking strong for Mercedes after two races without scoring.
BARCELONA, June 12 : Alpine driver Pierre Gasly was reinstated to the Monaco Grand Prix podium on Friday after Formula One stewards, meeting days later, recognised a timekeeping error and rescinded penalties for pitlane speeding that had dropped him to seventh.
MONTMELO: This was supposed to be George Russell ‘s chance to shoot for the Formula 1 title. Coming into the season as Mercedes’s presumptive lead driver, with his team producing the best car after a rulebook overhaul, Russell looked perfectly positioned to compete for the world championship after winning the year’s opening race in Australia. That was when his second-year teammate Kimi Antonelli blew past him and took the Formula 1 circuit by storm. Antonelli has made F1 history on several counts this season. At age 19, he became the youngest pole-sitter en route to his first win in China, followed by becoming F1’s youngest points leader after a win in Japan. The bushy-haired Italian just kept going, sweeping the alliterative triple of Miami, Montreal and Monaco to make it five in a row and tie the longest winning streak ever managed by F1 victory leader Lewis Hamilton. He will now try to make it six of six at the newly renamed Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix — the race formerly known as the Spanish GP — on Sunday. And while he’s perfectly aware that he is now the driver to beat, Antonelli is trying not to let it get to him. “About the championship, I am not really worrying about it,” he said on Thursday at the Montmelo track.
