It was hunt-some-shade time on a sweltering afternoon in the Gulf kingdom — 35 degrees celsius and track temperature nudging 50 degrees. As a consequence the relevance of the opening session on the rest of the weekend will be minimal, with second practice later Friday, Saturday’s qualifying and the race itself all staged at sunset and in cooler temperatures. The Dutch Red Bull driver crossed the finish line almost 1.5 seconds in front of Briton Norris, who held off his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri of Australia in third. The win on a damp but drying track at Suzuka was Verstappen's fourth straight victory in Japan and closed the gap on Norris at the top of the drivers' championship to one point.

Championship leader Lando Norris went fastest ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in Saturday's final practice for the Japanese Grand Prix as small trackside fires again disrupted the session. Britain's Norris, who was also quickest in Friday's first practice, clocked a fastest lap of 1min 27.965sec to lead Australia's Piastri by 0.026sec. Norris is looking for his second grand prix win of the season after triumphing at the opener in Australia and finishing second behind Piastri in China. Piastri won in Shanghai in a dominant start to the campaign for McLaren.
Oscar Piastri went fastest Friday for a McLaren one-two in a chaotic second practice for the Japanese Grand Prix that was red-flagged four times and saw Jack Doohan crash heavily. Two of the red flags were for trackside grass fires during a badly disrupted afternoon session in which Australia's Piastri clocked a best lap of 1min 28.114sec. He pipped teammate and championship leader Lando Norris by 0.049sec in dry but blustery conditions at Suzuka, where home hero Yuki Tsunoda showed promise on his Red Bull debut.
