MONTREAL :Max Verstappen put Red Bull on pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix with Alpine's Fernando Alonso leaping onto the front row alongside the Formula One championship leader in a wet qualifying on Saturday.

Max Verstappen had a far from ideal FP3 session with qualifying just hours away, but it could have been a whole lot worse after he went off the track at Turn 2. The reigning F1 world champion had opted to stay in the garage for the first half of the final practice before coming out on track with 24 minutes to go.
The final hour of practice before qualifying started in cold and wet conditions after heavy rain, which had hit Montreal regularly over the past few days, arrived early enough on Saturday to disrupt proceedings.
