The Wimbledon wildcard Katie Boulter has pulled off a remarkable win against a former world No 1, just two days after her grandmother died.
John Lloyd on the British tennis boom
The first week of Wimbledon has been filled with shock exits and surprise winners. Yesterday saw British hopefuls Liam Broady, Katie Boulter and Heather Watson progress to the third round of the prestigious tennis tournament.
Katie Boulter beat 2021 Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. She beat the world No. 7 in three sets, 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4, on Centre Court on Thursday afternoon, and her performance — that has set up a tie with Harmony Tan — has been praised by Mats Wilander and Laura Robson, who spoke on Eurosport after the match.
There were cheers and tears for Katie Boulter when a thrilling performance lifted Centre Court after the departures of Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu and kept British hopes alive.
