Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema continues to add to his legendary status in the UEFA Champions League. His goal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium against Manchester City moved him level with Robert Lewandowski's tally of 86 goals. The Madridista equals the Polish marksman as the third-highest goal scorer in European Cup history. Ahead of them on the list sit Cristiano Ronaldo (141) and Lionel Messi (125).
Real Madrid scripted yet another Champions League comeback at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, beating Manchester City (6-5 on aggregate) after extra-time in the second-leg of the semi-final tie on Wednesday. Trailing 0-1 (5-3 on aggregate) till the 89th minute, the 13-time UCL winners scored twice via Rodrygo Goes in the stoppage-time to push the game towards extra-time. Karim Benzema then scored from the spot after he was tripped inside the box by Ruben Dias, as Madrid held on to secure a place in the final.
Real Madrid added another mind-boggling comeback to the club's long history of magical European nights on Wednesday but the revival against Manchester City may prove to be less about the past and more about the future. Karim Benzema scored the winning penalty in extra-time to take his tally to 10 goals in six Champions League knock-out games, an astonishing record not least because of the stage, the class of opponent and the weight of his contributions. Against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and City, it was a goal by Benzema that sent Madrid through.
Thierry Henry has backed Karim Benzema to win the Ballon d'Or this year, but feels it could be decided by which team wins the Champions League final in Paris. Liverpool overcame a scare to beat Villarreal 5-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals, while Real Madrid pulled off a remarkable late comeback to beat Manchester City in extra-time to set up a mouth-watering final at the Stade de France on May 28.
Manchester City fans were left stunned as Real Madrid snatched a sure-shot Champions League finals spot right at the death in the second leg semi-finals at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday. English giants City entered the game with a goal's advantage post a thrilling 4-3 win at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg. However, the visitors were at the receiving end of one of the greatest comeback in Champions League history. After a thrilling first half that ended 0-0, City got themselves ahead and doubled their goal advantage through Riyad Mahrez's strike in the 73rd minute.
