BEIJING : A tearful Zhu Yi was inconsolable after nerves and pressure got the better of the U.S.-born Chinese figure skater, whose last-place performance knocked China to fifth place from third in the Beijing Games' team event on Saturday.
BEIJING : Kamila Valieva delivered a flawless short programme to put the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the lead before the final phase of the figure skating team event at the Beijing Olympics on Sunday.
Kamila Valieva, arguably the finest skater in the history of figureskating, topped the women's single skating short programme rankings with a superb performance in the team event. The 15-year-old executed her elements perfectly, showcasing her phenomenal technique, and raced into the lead with a score of 90.18. Ad/> Japan's Wakaba Higuchi came second, producing a big score of 74.73 which saw her pick up nine points for her nation.
American figure skating champion Mariah Bell is proof that a little bit of madness and "shameless belief" can go a long way in helping a late bloomer stay competitive in an event dominated by teenagers, according to proud coach Adam Rippon.
Russian teenager Kamila Valieva may or may not have any idea about Britain’s association with figure skating and Bolero — but it may help make her a star to UK audiences at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. At the age of just 15, she is the favourite to win gold having stunned recently at the figure skating European Championships, when she took the free skate title by an astonishing 22 points. Ad/> Valieva did that to Maurice Ravel’s Bolero, which was famously what Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean skated to on their way to ice dancing gold at the Sarajevo Games in 1984 — but this teenager is taking that music to a whole different level.
BEIJING : Stripped of their flag and anthem because of doping sanctions, Russian athletes are set to dominate the podium at the Beijing Olympics in figure skating and cross-country skiing, disciplines that could see them finish near the top of the medal table.
MOSCOW : European champion Kamila Valieva will lead a Russian figure skating team at the Beijing Olympics next month that is dominated by a bunch of talented teenagers who will be eager to obliterate the opposition.
