Australia have named a full-strength squad for their historic Test series in Pakistan, which is set to begin on March 4.
Australia batter Usman Khawaja on Tuesday said Aaron Finch (white-ball captain) and Pat Cummins (Test skipper) need to answer some questions in order to end the speculation regarding Justin Langer's resignation as coach of the senior men's team. Cricket Australia on Saturday accepted men's team head coach Justin Langer's resignation. "Justin was offered a short-term extension to his current contract, which sadly he has opted not to accept," stated an official Cricket Australia release.
Jason Gillespie on Tuesday said he is not interested in the top job and described Justin Langer's departure as "heartbreaking". Langer, under whose guidance Australia won the T20 World Cup and the Ashes series 4-0, stepped down last Saturday after facing complaints from players about his coaching style for months. Gillespie, who is South Australia's coach and also has the experience of guiding English county sides Sussex and Yorkshire, was touted as a potential replacement for Langer alongwith Trevor Bayliss, Ricky Ponting, Greg Shipperd and Michael Di Venuto.
Australian great Ian Chappell has called the past players supporting Justin Langer as his "PR machine". Chappell instead threw his weight behind skipper Pat Cummins, who had received flak for not backing the former coach in the lead-up to his resignation. Former cricketers such as Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Mitchell Johnson, Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne have slammed Cricket Australia and the members of the national team, especially Cummins, for not publicly supporting Langer, who was offered a short-term extension, which he declined.
MELBOURNE :Selection panel chief George Bailey has denied Justin Langer's claims that a lack of backing from senior players and support staff was responsible for the former opening batsman's departure as Australia coach.
Former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie on Tuesday said that he is not interested in coaching Australia after Justin Langer's resignation. Cricket Australia on Saturday accepted men's team head coach Justin Langer's resignation. "Justin was offered a short-term extension to his current contract, which sadly he has opted not to accept," stated an official Cricket Australia release.
Australian selector George Bailey doesn't believe the views of particular individuals led to the messy exit of Justin Langer.
Test batsman Usman Khawaja believes only captain Pat Cummins clearing the air over his role in Justin Langer's exit as Australia's coach will end speculation over a player revolt.
