Alexander Zverev is going to be «defined by his resilience» after making the French Open semi-finals a year on from his horror injury, says Mats Wilander. Zverev was locked in a fascinating, marathon duel with Rafael Nadal last year at Roland-Garros before going over on his ankle, and left Court Philippe-Chatrier in a wheelchair. Ad It has been a long road back to fitness for the German, but he has once more made the last four in Paris after seeing off Tomas Etcheverry.
Alexander Zverev reached the French Open semi-finals for a third successive season on Wednesday, one year after his tournament ended in pain and tears when he tore ankle ligaments which left him in a wheelchair. The German world number 27 claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina and will face either Casper Ruud, the 2022 runner-up, or Holger Rune for a place in Sunday's final. It will be Zverev's sixth Grand Slam semi-final and will be played on the same Philippe Chatrier Court where he suffered his nightmare season-ending injury against Rafael Nadal in 2022.
Juan Martin del Potro has said of the possibility that he could make a sensational return at the US Open as a former champion: «I still have time, I will start training, see how my leg and knee react and if I can do it or not». The hugely popular Argentine was speaking as part of an interview with South American sports reporter Danny Miche, and he delighted his many fans with the mere suggestion that he was hoping to launch a surprise comeback. Ad Del Potro, who won the US Open back in 2009, has at least admitted that he will give a return to Flushing Meadows a chance after he had to step away from the sport last year following persistent wrist and knee injuries.
Argentine Football Association international scouting director Juan Martin Tassi remains confident that Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho will pledge his international future to the 2022 World Cup winners.
Juan Martin del Potro says Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal denied him his “dream” of getting to world No. 1. Del Potro, who is now retired following multiple wrist and knee injuries, won the US Open in 2009, reached three other Grand Slam semi-finals, and tasted David Cup success with Argentina.
Watching back the 2013 Indian Wells final between Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro there is one word that keeps coming to mind: How? How was Del Potro’s forehand that good? Ad And how did Nadal keep on retrieving even the most punishing of those forehands? ATP Indian WellsNadal withdraws from Indian Wells and Miami Open due to injury28/02/2023 AT 17:56 It was one of the great Masters finals of the current era – and one that preceded arguably Nadal’s greatest season on tour. The 22-time Grand Slam champion will not be back at Indian Wells this month due to injury, but 10 years on from his stunning victory in 2013, we look at what it meant for him then, and what the future holds for him now.
